The epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) is located in St Brigids Ward on the 1st floor in Beaumont Hospital. The EMU is a specialised in-patient 2 bed unit that provides epilepsy monitoring for diagnostic and pre-surgical purposes.
The EMU provides detailed continuous EEG and audio-video monitoring to accurately study and record seizures over a period of time.
Information obtained in the EMU is used to -
• Evaluate persistent seizures that do not respond to drug therapy
• Classify seizure type.
• Locate the area of brain from which the seizure originates.
It is usually necessary to record several seizures. This information is used to determine the drug or surgical treatment most likely to be successful. The length of stay in the EMU varies, however the average is 8 days.
